One of the best EDC knives – Benchmade Griptilian 551
Benchmade American knives have long held a leading position in the global folding knife market. Those who have tried Benchmade knives are unlikely to want to use models from other manufacturers.
Today we’ll talk about the Benchmade Griptilian. This knife has long been in the top ranks among the leaders in sales in Benchmade catalogs. It is practical and versatile, and is also offered in a variety of modifications that differ from each other: the color of the handle, the coating of the blade, various knife sizes and the shape of the blades.
Benchmade Griptilian 551 knife review
Having picked up the Griptilian, you immediately pay attention to its weight. For a folding knife with such a massive blade, the weight within 3.88oz (110 grams) is a very good result. The length of the knife when unfolded is 8.07″ (202 mm), the length of the blade is 3.45″ (87 mm). The thickness of the butt is about 0.115″ (3.0 mm), but despite this, the manufacturer managed to make the blade quite sharp. Most likely due to the direct geometry of the blade.
The blade of the knife is made of steel CPM-S30V, which, according to the manufacturer, has a hardening hardness of about 58-60 HRC. Optimum hardness, the blade and sharpening holds for a long time, and cuts perfectly. The slopes are uniform, and the processing is generally at a high level. There is not a single defect on the blade. From the factory, the knife is sharpened at an angle of 20 degrees.
The opening mechanism on the Benchmade Griptilian works flawlessly, as it should be on a knife of such a price category.
The handle is made of proprietary Noryl GTX material. This beautiful name hides the usual thermoplastic – polyphenylene oxide, which is famous for its high resistance to chemical influences. In general, it feels like the material is quite ordinary and does not look expensive for such a knife. Some even complain that the geometry of the handle is not the most convenient, and that the knife does not lie in the hand the way the knife should lie at such a price, but individual characteristics of individuals play a large role here. As for holding in the hand, the Griptilian is perfectly held by both direct and reverse grip.
Advanced Model Griptilian 551-1 20CV
Benchmade Griptilian 551-1 knife is a kind of work on the bugs. The developers decided to globally update their model, and started with the blade. Instead of 154CM, powder steel CPM20CV was chosen, which is an analog of M390. The blade is perfectly reduced, the cut is aggressive, the carts are symmetrical. The sharpening angle is a little disappointing – it is as much as 38 degrees, although this can be normal for a universal knife. Downs come from half the butt.
Benchmade abandoned their super plastic with a handle, and put the G10. A large notch on the pads disappeared, due to which many complained, while blue bonks appeared, which gives the knife a unique appearance. The notches remained, but now they do not cause any inconvenience and at the same time do not allow the knife to slide in the palm of your hand. A notch appeared on the back of the handle below, it is quite large. The handle of the Benchmade Griptilian 551-1 model became noticeably thinner, in addition, the shank received a narrowing. The hilt used to lie perfectly in the palm of your hand, and now the feeling of unity with the knife has intensified even more.
Benchmade Griptilian knife is not in vain so popular. It is really a convenient and reliable universal blade. The appearance of the 551-1 model eliminated all the shortcomings that he had before.
